When I ran away at the end of my junior year, I only packed a couple of my journals, naively hopeful I could get the rest of my things mailed to me once I was somewhere safe. Spoiler alert, I did not, but I got my freedom so that’s cool. Anyway, half way through senior year, my English teacher and his wife begged me to go to college for some kind of writing degree, even offering to move me in with them so they could help me get there … apparently they saw my potential before I did. (Though looking back through adult eyes, they probably felt drawn to give the untethered runaway safety and stability too.)
I didn’t accept their generosity but I never stopped writing as a way to process my chaotic life. Turns out, my words were more than a cathartic release for me, they’ve allowed me to connect with, inspire, and mentor more folks than I ever imagined.
